  • Jaws (1975) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) are two of Steven Spielberg’s most famous films.
  • Jaws will be in both IMAX and RealD 3D.

There’s no information on ticket availability yet, but local theatres with IMAX or RealD screens could be able to help. The Jaws IMAX screenings are also in 2D. The 3D versions are not available in IMAX.

In a news statement, Universal Pictures president of domestic theatrical distribution Jim Orr said, “Universal is honored to have been a part of so many extraordinary, unforgettable Steven Spielberg films over the past 47 years, including Jaws in 1975, E.T. in 1982, and Jurassic Park in 1993.”

Added, “No filmmaker, it’s fair to say, has had a greater or more enduring impact on American cinema or has created more indelible cinematic memories for tens of billions of people worldwide. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of E.T. and the first Universal-Spielberg summer blockbuster, Jaws, than to allow audiences to experience these films in a way they’ve never been able to before.”

According to io9, Spielberg and Amblin were engaged in the conversions and gave their approval, but it’s unclear what would be altered or changed. E.T. is also the first theatrical adaptation. There’s no supplementary footage or CGI walkie-talkies in this film.

And, although that’s fantastic, I’m especially interested to see how a Steven Spielberg-approved 3D remake of Jaws turns out. I understand IMAX. It’s just larger and louder. But what about Jaws? In three dimensions? That’ll be fascinating to see.
