Prosecutors in British Columbia argued in court this week that a former Riverdale actor had plotted to kill Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
According to a statement from Dan McLaughlin, Communications Counsel for the BC Prosecution Service, Ryan Grantham pled guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Barbara Waite, in March.
According to a News reporter, who virtually attended Grantham’s sentencing this week, he was also accused of conspiring to kill Trudeau after his mother’s death.
Grantham is accused of assassinating his 64-year-old mother in their townhouse in March 2020, then loading his car with three firearms, Molotov cocktails, ammo, camping gear, and a map with directions to Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where Trudeau and his family reside. According to the CBC, the 24-year-old then got in his car and proceeded with the intention of killing Trudeau.
According to the news, Grantham mentioned killing Trudeau in both a police statement and a journal that was read in court.
Grantham finally turned the car back, according to Larsen, with plans to perpetrate mass carnage at his school, Simon Fraser University, or the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver. That night, though, he turned himself into Vancouver cops, telling them, “I killed my mother.”
Grantham gave a statement to the court at his sentencing on June 15, saying he is “sorry.”
“I’m unable to justify or explain my conduct. I have no justification, “According to Grantham. “It kills me to think about how much of my life I’ve squandered.” He continued, “Saying sorry seems futile in the face of something so heinous. But I apologise from the bottom of my heart.”
Grantham’s lawyer, Chris Johnson, claimed that mental illness influenced his decisions.
