The BBC has announced that it is in discussions with the show’s creator following HBO’s decision to stop producing Gentleman Jack.

The historical drama, a co-production between the broadcasters, stars Suranne Jones as 19th-century landowner Anne Lister, who is frequently referred to as the “first modern lesbian.”

The Sally Wainwright-produced series, which has received praise in the UK, is based on Lister’s diaries, some of which were written in a secret code.

However, in a statement to Deadline, HBO said it “will not be moving forward with the third season of Gentleman Jack.
