BTS may get an alternative service as lieu of compulsory military service. Park Hyeong Joon, the mayor of Busan, has asked the president of Korea to enable BTS to forego military duty and accept an alternate one in exchange.

“If BTS implements the alternative service system, the BTS members will be given a sense of national responsibility that is as excellent as military service, and they will serve the country with the capabilities that only they can do,” the mayor of Busan city said through SNS on August 18.

According to insiders, Park Hyeong Joon conveyed his worry to the Korean president of BTS that they might not be able to fulfil their important roles as ambassadors for World EXPO 2030 Busan because of the impending summons to active duty.

As quoted from ALLKPOP, he wrote in his letter that “if such a group were to roll up their sleeves and become directly involved in the challenge of having Busan appointed as the next city for the ‘World Expo’, this alone would amount to significant service to the nation, on par with mandatory military service.”

The mayor also thinks that this wouldn’t entail giving BTS special treatment; rather, they would be performing a wonderful service for the country, much as famous personalities in the arts or sports did in the past.

Midway through October, BTS will perform in Busan to coincide with their selection as ambassadors for the 2030 Busan World Expo.
