Netflix is working on an adaptation of the Black Samurai books with Chad Stahelski as the director and Leigh Dana Jackson as the writer, according to the initial story from Deadline.

Along with Jason Spitz, Alex Young, John Schoenfelder, and Russell Ackerman, Stahelski will work on the production.

Liza Fleissig and Andre Gaines from Cinematic Studios are joining Diane Crafford as executive producers.

The two things that Stahelski is best known for are his work as a stuntman and directing the whole John Wick series.

He is presently working on John Wick 4, which is scheduled to hit theatres next year. As well as directing the upcoming assassin movie Shibumi for Warner Bros., he is currently producing a spin-off series called The Continental.

He also infamously filled in for Brandon Lee after Lee tragically died on the production of the 1994 movie The Crow.

Jackson is now working with David Goyer to adapt Michael Moorcock’s series The Eternal Champion for Apple TV+.

Jackson is also the writer and executive producer of the Apple TV+ series Foundation. Additionally, he and Chad Hanley are co-writing the Image Comics book Bitter Root.

Most recently, they adapted Stephen King’s novella Throttle for HBO Max.

Jackson’s past work includes the Netflix series Raising Dion and the FX series The Spook Who Stood By The Door, both of which he wrote and produced.

The pulpy thriller book series that the late author Marc Olden wrote includes the Black Samurai books.

Eight novels make up the series, which centres on the fictional Robert Sand, an American soldier stationed in Japan who discovers samurai history and martial techniques.

Over many years, Robert develops his skills in swordplay, martial arts, and stealth to defeat hostile armies. He also becomes the first Black person to ever take the samurai oath and develops into one of sensei Konuma’s best fighters.

The first book is around a vengeance mission, whereas the subsequent novels are fanciful world-trotting adventures with black market warheads, pimps, millionaires driven by power, voodoo priests, a solid gold katana, and numerous casualties along the way.

The Netflix version of Black Samurai is still in the planning stages, and a release date has not yet been set.
