Guillermo del Toro, who is renowned for having a unique vision that has led to some of the most fantastical and frightful stories of our time, is back in action with his upcoming Netflix anthology series, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

In a recent interview with Netflix, the Academy Award–winning director and fellow horror creator Mike Flanagan discussed their upcoming projects for the spooky season of 2022.

Del Toro opened up about what inspired him to create the four-night event and the stories that he wrote, eager to offer his fans a peek behind the scenes of the tales that are still to be told.

The monster maestro admitted it has been a longtime dream of his to see that same style play out on television ever since reading his very first horror novel, which just so happened to be an anthology series.

Del Toro remarked, adding that he has a soft place for “writing short stories,” “I wanted to do an anthology that harvested some of the best that I’ve read, and a few new ideas that I want to write.”

Two of del Toro’s ideas will be brought to life in the upcoming project, along with work from other authors, such as Emily Carroll, the creator of the comic book series Mandy, Panos Cosmatos, and Aaron Stewart-Ahn, and, of course, H.P. Lovecraft, because no horror anthology would be complete without a story drawn directly from or inspired by the works of the venerable Lovecraft?

Del Toro’s collections serve as the event’s bookends, with “Lot 36” opening on October 25 and “The Murmuring” capping things off on October 28.

The former was inspired by the idea of someone acquiring a storage unit that contains sinister and frightening secrets, while the latter was one of the director of The Shape of Water’s original ideas.

Del Toro recounts his own storage blunder, saying, “They sent the mail to the wrong address, and they sold all my storage to somebody. It had all my storyboards and it took a while to recuperate.” A nightmare indeed, but it eventually led del Toro to dream up the plot for “Lot 36” which Regina Corrado then adapted for the big screen (Deadwood).

Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen) was cast as the episode’s main character, while Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth) was brought in to direct.

Regarding “The Murmuring,” del Toro reveals that he noticed a flock of birds while on vacation in Europe and wondered,  “‘What if the birds were murmuring in the sky? What if they were forming patterns because they carry the souls of the dead?’”

The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent was invited to serve as the episode’s director by the Crimson Peak director in order to bring in another sharp mind for this chapter. Regarding a decision Kent made that he “didn’t see coming,” del Toro reflects,  “She made it a story about healing, and I was blown away.”

Essie Davis (Babadook), Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), and Hannah Galway will star in the anthology collection’s last episode (Under the Banner of Heaven).
