Netflix responds to Sir John Major’s criticism of The Crown by defending it.

The fifth and final season of the wildly popular Netflix series The Crown, which tells the tale of the late Queen Elizabeth II, is currently in production.

But for a variety of reasons, the upcoming season has already attracted a lot of public interest. Sir John Major recently called a scenario that purportedly shows a conspiracy to assassinate the late Queen “a barrel-load of malicious nonsense,” in an interview with The Mail.

The publication was informed by Sir John’s staff that no such discussion ever took place.

According to a statement from his office, “Sir John has not co-operated in any way with The Crown. Nor has he ever been approached by them to fact-check any script material in this or any other series.”

“As you will know, discussions between the monarch and prime minister are entirely private and – for Sir John – will always remain so. But not one of the scenes you depict are accurate in any way whatsoever. They are fiction, pure and simple.”

The Crown’s spokesperson responded to these accusations by stating that, “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.”

“Series five is a fictional dramatization, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the royal family – one that has already been scrutinized and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians”, she continued.
