In a recent interview, human rights attorney and trade unionist Sudha Bharadwaj discussed Rhea Chakraborty. She recalls seeing Rhea while she was incarcerated and how the actor didn’t have an air about her as she interacted with the prisoners and even gave a performance for them on her last day there. Rhea, who was dating the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput at the time of his passing in 2020, had been held in Byculla jail for 28 days before being released.

Sudha was detained in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case after being freed from Mumbai’s Byculla jail in December of last year after serving three years in prison. She claimed in a recent interview that despite facing media scrutiny and backlash on social media following Sushant’s murder, Rhea handled everything with grace and was great friends with the convicts in Byculla jail when she was there. In connection with a narcotics investigation involving Sushant’s death, who was discovered dead in his Mumbai flat in June 2020, Rhea was detained.

“The Sushant Singh Rajput thing had been going on and on and on in the media, like it was crazy. At that time, we used to say that Rhea is being made a scapegoat. We were very unhappy with it. So, I was very glad that she was not brought into the main barrack; she was kept in the special cell. I think she was kept there so that she did not see the TV because people would keep that TV on. All the time hearing about your case would have been too upsetting for her,” Sudha said.

Sudha continued to speak about Rhea, “I must say for somebody, who had been thrown into a situation like that… for her as a young person, she took it very sportingly. And she was so friendly with people. She was so friendly with the children. The first day (they met her), everybody was going ‘Rhea kahan hai (where is Rhea)?’ You know, how people are. But she would never make a thing of it. And when she left, she had some money remaining in her account, so for all the barracks she asked for sweets to be given, and everybody came down to wish her goodbye. Then, everybody said, ‘Rhea, one dance, one dance’. And she actually obliged. So sweet. She danced with them (the inmates).”

Sudha continued by quoting Rhea as saying that even though everyone believes inmates are terrible criminals, she recognized they were all awaiting trial and their guilt had not yet been established. Rhea had promised to bring all these recollections of the convicts’ daily lives back to her house, Sudha recalled.

When Sushant was discovered dead in his Mumbai flat, Rhea was dating him. Days after Sushant’s passing, KK Singh, Sushant’s father, had filed a FIR charging Rhea with aiding suicide and money laundering. The allegations of money laundering and drug use are being looked at by the Enforcement Directorate and Narcotics Control Bureau, respectively, before the case was passed to the Central Bureau of Investigation. After spending 28 days in the Byculla jail on drug-related charges relating to the case, Rhea was released on bond in October 2020.
