‘The Conjuring 4’ is in development, with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and producing combo James Wan and Peter Safran set to return.
Johnson-McGoldrick is a franchise favorite and frequent collaborator with James Wan, having written the scripts for the second and third Conjuring films as well as Wan’s upcoming DCEU sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which also stars The Conjuring star Patrick Wilson with Jason Momoa.
Wan stated in an Instagram post that both Wilson and his Conjuring world partner Vera Farmiga will return for the next sequel.
The pair have portrayed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in four films under James Wan’s eight-film Conjuring universe.
Wilson and Farmiga reprised their roles as the Warrens in 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which increased the franchise’s cumulative earnings to more than $2.1 billion.
The Conjuring has become the highest-grossing horror franchise to date and one of the most lucrative franchises in modern media, with a combined budget of only $178 million.
Michael Chaves, who is presently directing another Conjuring universe spin-off with The Nun 2, which just began filming in France this month, helmed The Devil Made Me Do It. Even though no director has been confirmed for The Conjuring 4, it is plausible that Chaves will return.
Johnson-history McGoldrick’s of writing horror begins with the unnerving 2009 thriller Orphan, which also contains an outstanding performance by Vera Farmiga.
Earlier this year, the author also returned to pen the prequel Orphan: First Kill. The Conjuring series is based on the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, thus Johnson-McGoldrick has hundreds of files of source material from which to draw inspiration for the upcoming instalment.
Wilson and Farmiga’s Ed and Lorraine’s amazing connection and everlasting partnership is the genuine secret ingredient of the Conjuring films.
Throughout a viewing of the third film, Johnson-McGoldrick tweeted: “One of the things that was really important to me when writing this script was that Ed and Lorraine never fight. I think that one of the things people like about them is that they have this fantasy relationship that we all want.”
Therefore, if there is anyone we can rely on to bring these characters back for more terrifying adventures, it is he.
The Conjuring 4 does not yet have a release date, but Collider will provide updates as they become available. Check out our conversation with Wilson and Farmiga following the release of The Devil Made Me Do It below.
