There is undoubtedly case in the Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, a Netflix original film about World War I that follows its characters as they struggle through the gruesome front lines.

Through the streamer’s Twitter account, viewers can get a behind-the-scenes peek at one of those heated situations while the final result plays above them.

Making a project with extensive battle sequences requires careful planning and execution. When a horrific and deadly battlefield scenario is done successfully, like in Game of Thrones’ iconic Season 6 episode “Battle of the Bastards” or the duration of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, it puts the audience right in the thick of the action, making them feel their soldiers’ fear alongside them.

The action-packed and mood-setting opening scene’s clip shows a soldier moving in the direction of the opposition. The audience is brought along on his mission to survive as cameras monitor his every move.

The finished scenario is shown in a split format, with the action taking place below and cameras closely following the performer as it happens.

In stark contrast, performers run and scurry about in full costume through explosions, gunshots, and smoke as camera operators stand in the thick of it all wearing puffy jackets.

Before the close-up view is through, the soldier can be seen running straight into the action with the cameras and boom mic operators chasing after him.

Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, which is based on the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, is the third film adaptation of the book, but the first by a German director.

The narrative exposes viewers to a young squad of recent German army recruits under the command of Felix Kammerer’s Paul Bäumer during the bloodiest hours of World War One.

The young men, many of whom have not yet turned 18 years old, excitedly enlist up to fight in what they perceive to be an easily won battle as a result of all the propaganda being directed at them about it.

The young men learn they’ve been misled by their country and are now lucky to survive, as the brutal reality of dark, dirty, and bloody battlefields become a part of their daily lives.

The film also stars Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovi, Sebastian Hülk, David Striesow, Adrian Grünewald, Luc Feit, Tobias Langhoff, Andreas Döhler, Alexander Schuster, Michael Stange, Michael Wittenborn, André Marcon, and Anton von Lucke in addition to Kammerer. Daniel Brühl (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier) also makes an appearance.
