Danny Boyle & Cillian Murphy want to reunite for another sequel
It’s likely that you are familiar with Danny Boyle, post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Days Later, which starred Cillian Murphy, if you enjoy the genre of horror.
The story of Jim, a bicycle courier who recovers from a coma to discover a mostly deserted London filled with zombies as a result of the unintentional transmission of a highly contagious virus, was told in the movie that was released twenty years ago.
The film revived the zombie subgenre for the big screen, solidifying Boyle’s reputation as a director and Murphy’s as an actor.
Then it continued into the follow-up 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel published in 2007 called 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, and a series of comic books with the same name.
In an interview with NME, Boyle and Murphy announced plans to reconnect for a threequel in honour of the original movie’s 20th anniversary.
The actor admitted that another instalment in the franchise is always on his mind and that he “loves the idea, and it’s incredibly enticing” to him.
He went on to say that he recently showed it to his kids for Halloween maybe four or five years ago, and they had a great time with it.
“It actually stands up, which is astonishing for a film that’s 20 years old,” the commenter continued.
Since the release of the 2002 film, Boyle has produced films like Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and Steve Jobs, while Murphy has been busy producing films like the fan favourite series Peaky Blinders, Inception, Dunkirk, and other films.
It’s amazing to learn that a third movie is still in the works after all of these endeavours.
Boyle claimed that 28 Months Later already has a script, with a “beautiful idea” at its foundation, penned by Alex Garland, the screenwriter of the first film.
I’d be really tempted [to direct it], he added as he continued to express his delight. Actually, that seems like a great time.
Funny how you brought up this script, which is once again set in England and is very much about England, and I hadn’t given it much thought before.
As audiences have “less and less reasons” to go to the movies these days, he believes that the film can regain its emphasis. He clarified:
“One of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”
Keep an eye out, aficionados of horror, since Boyle and Murphy might be reuniting soon.
