James Cameron on Jake and Neytiri’s changes since ‘Avatar’
Fans have been eagerly waiting for Avatar: The Way of Water for the past 13 years, and just as the last ten years have changed us as viewers, so too have the characters in the future film.
James Cameron, the film’s director, has defended the feature’s three-hour running time by saying that the future film focuses more on emotions.
The director talked about Jake and Neytiri’s family dynamics and how having four kids has affected them in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Ten years have passed after the events of the first Avatar when The Way of Water is set, and Jake and Neytiri have started a family.
Being a parent alters your behaviour and value system significantly, according to Cameron. Our first looks at their children Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), and their adopted daughter Kiri came from previously released photographs and the trailer (Sigourney Weaver).
Conditions have now forced their family out from their safe sanctuary in the rainforest and toward the seashore.
The director summarized the development of our main characters as follows: “What we saw in the first film were people who were fearless. Jake would throw himself off his ikran onto a leonopteryx (creatures featured in Avatar) but is a father of four going do that?” Keeping the emotional themes of the movie in mind, Cameron thinks “probably not, because they have a duty to survive. It doesn’t mean he’s a coward, but it means his priorities change.”
There will undoubtedly be a war, in which Jake will undoubtedly take part. It appears that he will be faced with a moral dilemma over how to keep the kids safe.
According to Cameron, “He’s trying to keep his kids alive and attempt to change his own life.” What’s more, “Is he still a warrior? Are these young lads, who are 14, 15, and 16 years old, becoming more and more eager to go to war and defend their people and their land? When he has to go do it, how is [Jake] going to act hypocritically and hold them back? It appears that Jake and Neytiri must first deal with some teenagers!
Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully in the upcoming film, and other actors include Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, and Matt Gerald as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet.
