Kevin Hart Discusses Learning from Past Mistakes
Kevin Hart knows how important it is to give people a second chance after a scandal.
The 43-year-old comedian was on a new episode of The Very well Mind Podcast on Monday to talk about his Audible Original book Monsters and How to Tame Them with the show’s host, licensed therapist Amy Morin.
Hart said, “Absolutely,” when asked if he has to be “more careful” with the jokes he tells in the “world of “cancel culture” “these days.” “Let’s be honest: a lot of changes were needed and needed to be made, right? And I think being aware should be a top priority for all of us. Just being aware, “said Hart. “We’re getting to know each other better, and we should treat that as a sign of respect.”
“Now, people are more sensitive than ever,” he said. “People have more opinions now than ever before because social media has given everyone a lot of ways to say what they think and how they feel. So now you are hearing things that we didn’t hear very often. You hear the conversations you might not have known about because they are all happening right now.”
Hart added, “Having said that, we can’t stop laughing at ourselves.” The actor from Me Time said he does his best to show “transparency” and “authenticity” by talking about things that some people don’t find funny.
Hart said, “I feel like a line has been drawn, and some people are tiptoeing around it while others are crossing it with force.” “Find a middle ground where we can all stand on this line, no matter which side we’re on, and hold each other’s hands knowing we don’t mean any harm. I think that’s the point at hand.”
He said, “We forget that there has to be a world that gives us a chance to get better. What the f—- would be the point? Where do we go? If everything is bad once you’ve done it and there’s nothing else you can do because you’ve already done it, then what the hell? You have to make mistakes to learn from them and to see what you’re supposed to grow from in real life.” When he was chosen to host the Oscars in 2018, Hart got into a lot of trouble. After the announcement, there was backlash. Twitter users brought up old homophobic tweets Hart had posted almost a decade ago, as well as a controversial joke he made about the gay community in stand-up. He quit his job at the Oscars in the end.
The comic told the Sunday Times last year, “What, three or four times have my plans been changed? Didn’t bother. If you let it, it will change how you feel. Personally? I don’t do things that way. I know that people are people. We can all change.” Hart said at the time, “If someone has done something really bad, then there should be a consequence.” “But when you talk about nothing but… nonsense? When you’re talking, ‘Someone said! They have to come down!’ Just shut your mouth. What do you want to say?”
