The well-known horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan recently wrote a lengthy article on Tumblr about his experience producing Doctor Sleep and the stress it caused him.

He touched on the subject of choosing the ideal actors for the movie when writing about the challenges of fusing the universes of Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King’s The Shining.

He spoke highly of Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, but he also recalled how confident he and the other members of the casting team were in choosing Kyliegh Curran.

In the movie, Curran plays Abra Stone, a young shine bearer who is guided by an older Danny Torrance (McGregor), who teams up with him to battle the True Knot and defend her abilities.

It was vital to locate the ideal casting to work with McGregor as Abra developed within the plot as she was another user of the gleaming, whose abilities eventually grew to surpass even Dan’s.

She is eventually to blame for persuading Dan to use his talents once more and for entangling him in the conflict with Rose the Hat (Ferguson).

According to Flanagan, the role of Abra proved to be the most difficult to fill because of the enormous number of applicants and the calibre of the aspiring young actors who attended the auditions. But in the end, he and McGregor were in complete agreement about who ought to play the part:

‘Finding Abra Stone was more difficult – we auditioned more than 900 girls for the part. We’d narrowed it down to a half-dozen very promising and successful young actresses, including Lulu Wilson (who I’d worked with several times before and adore), but Kyliegh Curran’s self-tape audition rose to the very top of the pile. Ewan flew to Atlanta to read with our final picks, and when Kyliegh – who lived 15 minutes from our office, was local casting, and had never booked a job before – finished reading, he turned to us and said “I mean it’s her, right?” It absolutely was.’

Flanagan and the team were overjoyed to cast Curran as Abra, so they took special care to get ready for her first trip to the production office:

‘When we cast her, we invited her back to the office after school one day to get oriented. The crew was so excited for her that they decorated the production office in her honor.’

Curran only appeared in one movie at the time, I Can, I Will, I Did, but she starred with Ewan McGregor and stole the show, winning a Saturn Award for her work. She later went on to feature opposite Preston Oliver in Disney’s Secrets of Sulphur Springs, and she also provided the voice for Lego Star Wars Summer Vacation.

In the Edgar Allen Poe adaption The Fall of the House of Usher, which will be available on Netflix next year, she will reteam with Flanagan for her next significant part.

She will join a long list of Flanagan regulars, including his wife Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Michael Trucco, as well as Carla Gugino, Willa Fitzgerald, T’Nia Miller, Ruth Codd, and Mark Hamill, with this part.
