I love Weekend Update when Cecily Strong shines. This week’s Saturday Night Live was critical because this week’s US elections are crucial for abortion access.

I understood when Strong appeared on Weekend Update as “Tammy the Trucker” to discuss gas prices. Strong gave an emotional monologue on Weekend Update disguised as a clown about abortion rights and how the clown’s early abortion impacted her life. Strong told Variety how personal the role was and how vital these rights are.

It shouldn’t be shocking that Strong returned to the Weekend Update stage with something to say about everything going on in the run-up to the election on November 8th that involves numerous Republican candidates who support a national ban on abortion. Despite Tammy’s claims that this was about gas pricing.

Colin Jost ultimately asks Strong (and says “Cecily” so we know he’s talking to Strong and not the character) what’s wrong, and although she attempts to stay in character, she keeps making references to this election and what’s at stake. Tammy the Trucker was doing a piece about gas. It is quite obvious that this is a matter of abortion rights, and she tells Jost how frightening it is and how each of us must play a role in it.

Strong makes a passionate appeal at the end of the comic to vote in the upcoming election and ensure that we uphold our constitutional rights. It was very fantastic to see Strong back on Weekend Update and using her position (which she discusses in the sketch) for good.

I heard advertisements from Connecticut, Long Island, and New York State while watching Saturday Night Live here in New York. They ranged from “MAGA” Republicans who wanted to block my access to abortion healthcare to Democrats stressing the importance of the election.

It’s a scary time for Tammy the Trucker and for all of us, but I will always be grateful to Strong for her openness about abortion rights on such a significant stage as the successful show and for her vulnerability on Saturday Night Live.
