Adam Sandler was curious to see how reviewers would respond to Billy Madison, but he was disappointed.

“When Billy Madison came out, me and the writer [Tim Herlihy] were like, ‘Oh yeah, they’ll write about this in New York!’ ” Sandler, now 56, told Netflix of his basketball drama Hustle, citing Entertainment Weekly. We grew up reading newspapers and attended NYU.

“Then 90% of the publications say ‘This is crap,'” he continued, admitting the negative feedback “stung” since “your grandmother’s reading it.”

The 1995 comedy stars Sandler as Billy, a pampered slacker who decides to repeat all 12 grades to become manager of his father’s firm (Bradley Whitford).

Billy Madison has 41% on Rotten Tomatoes yet a 79% Audience Score. Box Office Mojo reports the comedy made $25 million worldwide on a $10 million budget.

Darren McGavin, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Larry Hankin, Chris Farley, and Norm MacDonald also featured.

Sandler told Netflix, “When I was 17, I didn’t worry about criticism.” “I didn’t expect anything. I assumed you created movies that people watch.”

He and Herlihy decided, “Maybe we shouldn’t read these terrible evaluations.”
Sandler said he and his writing partner “still somewhat heard about it” when doing Happy Gilmore (1996), The Waterboy (1998), The Wedding Singer (1998), and Big Daddy (1998). (1999).
