Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer special effects are realistic.

Cillian Murphy stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project genius who helped design the atomic weapon.

The director told Total Film for its 2023 Preview edition, according Games Radar, “Recreating the Trinity test without CGI was a major task.”

Nolan hired visual-effects supervisor Andrew Jackson “early on” in the project, and Jackson “was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather”

“The extreme weather posed significant practical obstacles,” he said.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film stars Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife Katherine, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons, and Matt Damon as Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, who oversaw the Pentagon’s construction and directed the Manhattan Project.

Murphy, 46, starred in Nolan’s Batman Begins, Inception, and Dunkirk.

Murphy told Variety in February, “I’ll always show up for Chris, whatever the role.” “I’ll answer Chris’s call. Isn’t it great that directors still produce tough, film-based studio films?”

Irish actor: “He’s flying the flag” “He, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Quentin Tarantino are great directors”

Nolan told Total Film that he’s “thrilled” with Oppenheimer, which is “a narrative of great scope and scale”

“One of the most daunting projects I’ve ever undertaken in terms of magnitude and Oppenheimer’s tale,” stated the filmmaker. “Logistical and practical problems were enormous.”

“But I had an outstanding team,” Nolan said. “We’re not done yet. I’m happy with what my team has accomplished as I see the results come in and edit the video.”
