Dhamaka, which was directed by Ravi Teja, got off to a strong start at the box office yesterday, grossing slightly over Rs. 7 crores (Rs. 4.40 crores share) in Telugu states.

With only Rs. 40 lakhs arriving from Karnataka for an estimated Rs. 7.50 crores on the first day across all of India, the earnings outside of Telugu states were modest.

The first-day earnings are lower than those for Ravi Teja’s previous release, Rama Rao on Duty, with the difference primarily occurring in Andhra Pradesh, maybe as a result of a less-widely publicized release. Due to greater audience feedback and the upcoming holiday season, the movie is in a better position than Rama Rao was after the first day, despite its slower start. The movie may have benefited more from the holiday season, but since Sunday is already a holiday and Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on those days, there isn’t much to be gained.

Following is a breakdown of Dhamaka’s box office receipts by region in India:

Nizam – Rs. 3.15 crores (Rs. 1.85 crores share)
Ceeded – Rs. 1.05 crores (Rs. 75 lakhs share)

Andhra – Rs. 2.85 crores (Rs. 1.80 crores share)

AP/TS – Rs. 7.05 crores (Rs. 4.40 crores share)

Karnataka – Rs. 40 lakhs (Rs. 17 lakhs share)
Rest of India – Rs. 10 lakhs (Rs. 4 lakhs share)

India – Rs. 7.55 crores (Rs. 4.60 crores share)

The other new release of the week, Nikhil starrer 18 Pages had a poor start with the opening day of just Rs. 2 crores in Telugu states.
