Former New Jersey police officer will spend 79 years in prison for killing his wife after they had broken up.

A news release from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said that John Formisano was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing his wife Christie Formisano in 2019 at their home in Jefferson Township, N.J., which is about 45 miles from New York City.

After an eight-day trial, John, 52, was also found guilty of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an illegal purpose, second-degree official misconduct, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and third-degree hindering apprehension or prosecution.

On Monday, a judge gave him a decades-long prison sentence. WCBS-TV says that during the hearing, Christie’s mother read a letter from the couple’s 11-year-old daughter. “I know it’s not a nice thing to say, but I hate him (John), and I’m afraid I’ll never hear or see him again,” the girl reportedly wrote.

On July 14, 2019, police were called to a home in Jefferson Township because shots had been fired. When they got there, they found Christie, who was 37, dead on the front porch steps.

Another man, who the news outlet said was Christie’s boyfriend, was shot multiple times but lived. Reports say that John and Christie’s kids were also home at the time of the accident, but they were not hurt.

WCBS says that after the shooting, John was caught on his way to his mother’s house in Livingston, N.J. Even though he wasn’t working, he was still wearing his Newark police uniform. The gun used to kill his ex-wife was given to him by his job, the news source says. The station says that John’s lawyers plan to appeal the judge’s decision.
