Royal observers believed Prince Harry’s relationship with his family had reached rock bottom in 2021, when he and Meghan Markle sat down for a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey. But by 2022, the schism had become even wider, with the Sussexes raising new claims about their treatment as working royals.

While they were reunited with King Charles, Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Kate for the first time since leaving the UK and relocating to America, the Sussexes’ Netflix docuseries is sure to have crushed any hopes of reconciliation.

With three journeys to the Duke’s homeland this year, the couple spent more time with the royals than they had in the previous 24 months, and they also introduced their daughter Lilibet to her great-grandmother and royal grandparents.

Just a few weeks later, Harry accused his brother of “screaming and shouting” at him, while Meghan portrayed the royals as formal behind-the-scenes.

As the year 2022 comes to a close, we look back at some of the most defining moments in their difficult relationships during the previous year.

Back in April, Harry and Meghan surprised tourists in Windsor by paying a covert visit to the Queen on their way to Holland for the Invictus Games.

They stayed at Frogmore Cottage, their old home, and had “clearing the air” sessions with the Queen and Charles.

They couldn’t see Prince William and Princess Kate, who were said to be on a skiing trip with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

It was Meghan’s first trip back to the UK or visit with her in-laws since making a series of alarming charges in her bombshell Oprah interview.

Senior royal sources described Meghan and Harry’s meetings with the Queen and Charles as “incredibly warm and good natured” with another saying they were “very cordial”.

A source close to the Sussexes said: “Both the Duke and Duchess are very mindful that the Queen is getting older and has had health issues associated with her great age in recent months.

“They have made it clear they’re certainly planning to return to see the Queen with their family in the near future.”

Her Majesty was informed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would return with their children Archie and Lilibet. They kept their word, and the Queen was able to meet her great-granddaughter during the couple’s Jubilee visit.

This year, the late Queen celebrated her 70th year on the reign with four days of royal engagements and celebrations.

Meghan and Harry returned to the United Kingdom to join in the festivities, bringing Archie and Lilibet with them. During their stay, their daughter celebrated her first birthday, and they later shared images from a special birthday party they held at Frogmore Cottage for the occasion.

The pair was not invited to the Buckingham Palace balcony with the rest of the royal family for the majority of the formal Jubilee activities.
