Henry Cavill triumphantly returned as Superman in a post-credits stinger, squaring up against Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam and teasing a massive fight between the two, making him feel on top of the world.

Days later, Cavill formally announced his return to the character of Clark Kent. At the same time, Netflix announced that Cavill would be leaving his starring role as Geralt of Rivia on The Witcher and be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in a decision that was said to be unrelated to the DC events.

Cavill is doing OK so far, right? Wait a minute. When James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to serve as the co-heads of DC Studios, Warner Bros.’ plans for a Cavill-starring Superman movie from Charles Roven—for which writers were being sought—were upended.

After cancelling that potential movie, the two went on to destroy the DC Extended Universe. Gunn revealed he was writing a fresh story for a younger Superman movie without Cavill. In a kind response, Cavill praised the DC team and expressed his delight in having portrayed the part.

Fans were consequently hopeful that Cavill would return to The Witcher with nothing else tying him down for a protracted amount of time now that DC was off the table. It has since confirmed that there are no plans to change The Witcher’s Season 4, with Hemsworth still involved and Cavill left to wiggle his fingers.

Superman was not thought to have anything to do with his departure from the show, but sources indicated that he had a falling out with the show’s production and writing staff over creative disagreements over the show’s direction. His third and last season has not yet aired, but Netflix anticipates strong viewership.

Despite the tension around Cavill’s leaving and Hemsworth’s hire, Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canadian scripted programmes, Peter Friedlander, reassured viewers that Hemsworth was the best candidate to take the reins and steer the show moving forward.

Henry is an outstanding Geralt, and Liam will likely continue to be one as well, according to Friedlander. We are quite optimistic about the legacy of amazing, legendary characters whose actors have changed.

All the way through, we will uphold the intellectual property, the fans, and the storytelling. Cavill has temporarily lost two parts that he has previously referred to as dream occupations.
