James Corden could have gone in many other directions with respect to his career.

The host of the Late Late Show said on Tuesday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he once “auditioned for Lord of the Rings” along with “every single person in London.” This was one of his first film tryouts.

“I tried out for Samwise Gamgee,” said Corden, 44, referring to the role of the hobbit that went to Sean Astin.

“Mr. Frodo!” I said with the accent and everything.

Corden said that his audition wasn’t good and went on to say that he and two friends also tried out and “got all called back the next day” and the day after that.

But, he said with a laugh, “none of us got called back after that.” He also said that he “very much enjoys” the Lord of the Rings movies now, without any hard feelings.

Lord of the Rings, based on J.R.R. Tolkien books, spawned a Hobbit film spinoff trilogy directed by Jackson, 61, and a new Prime Video series, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The epic takes place before The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. It takes place in Tolkien’s Middle-earth but follows a different plot from the classic films. It introduces LOTR and Hobbit movie fans to legends of Middle-fabled earth’s Second Age.

Corden recently said that leaving The Late Late Show in spring 2023 will be “beyond emotional” Into the Woods, Cats, The Prom, and Peter Rabbit feature him.

“I worry I’m overly emotional. I fear overweeping “Corden told PEOPLE at the Mammals premiere. “But I need to take a breath and know there’s much to do until then.”

“I guess we have a hundred left,” he said. “Many TV tasks! Much to display.”

As for what he’ll miss most about the CBS hit chat programme, Corden said it’s the individuals he’s met along the way.
