James Gunn began writing a new Superman movie for DC, after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role of Superman was recently announced.

The project will follow a younger iteration of the character, according to Gunn. It makes sense that he’ll be writing it because the director recently stated in remarks that the studio is moving forward with the iconic superhero as a “priority.”

There are no other details on the project that are currently known, besides the fact that Gunn is the movie’s writer.

Fans of Cavill’s Superman probably won’t be happy about this, but it only serves to further solidify DC’s new course.

This is just the latest in what will probably be a long string of announcements about the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, about which news has been trickling out here and there.

Gunn added that the slate he and DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran have created will soon be announced. There have been hints left and right about what the two have talked about, including a picture of the fictional character Mister Terrific and artwork from the infamous Kingdom Come plot.

The Suicide Squad from a year ago was the director’s first project with DC, and it led to the critically acclaimed Peacemaker series on HBO Max earlier this year.

For Gunn’s interpretation of the Superman character, there is some precedent to be enthusiastic about. The director also produced Brightburn, a 2019 movie about a Superman-like figure who is headed in the wrong direction.

In that movie, Jackson A. Dunn played the title role opposite Elizabeth Banks and David Denman. Despite only earning $32.8 million globally, Brightburn received positive reviews for its parody of the superhero genre. At the very least, a distinctive take on a character as well-known and iconic as this demonstrates a deep understanding of the IP.

Fans must be surprised that Cavill isn’t involved with this project considering that they just saw the actor make a comeback in Black Adam alongside Dwayne Johnson.

Even though Gunn’s return was alluring, there is undoubtedly something exciting in the works. The return of perhaps the most recognisable superhero has been eagerly anticipated by fans.

Based on this information, it is only reasonable to assume that Clark Kent/Superman will serve as a cornerstone of DC Studios’ new strategy.
