King Charles III of the United Kingdom is said to have departed Windsor Castle for Sandringham to celebrate his first Christmas without Queen Elizabeth.

The father of Prince William and Prince Harry appeared to be in good spirits as he waved to royal well-wishers from the front seat of a car transporting him away from the official royal house in Berkshire.

The King was said to be on his way to Sandringham, where he will spend Christmas with some of his closest relatives.

The Palace has previously stated that Charles will follow in the late Queen’s footsteps and spend Christmas in Norfolk, as she has done since the late 1980s.

The king would be joined by members of the Royal Family on Christmas Day morning at St Mary Magdalene Church, a chapel on the Sandringham estate where royals usually attend the morning service on December 25.

On Tuesday, King Charles will welcome dozens of members of the Royal Family for the annual pre-Christmas supper. The late Queen used to host this event, which was one of her final obligations in London before her winter break at Sandringham.
