Mike Flanagan & Trevor Macy leaves Netflix for Amazon
Mike Flanagan has been the subject of the majority of nightmares for horror fans. Now, the talented genre director and his business partner, Trevor Macy, have agreed to an exclusive new deal with Amazon Studios for their Intrepid Pictures label.
Being a fan of horror has never been more exciting. There have been so many incredible new movies and television shows in the last ten years that have terrified viewers all over the world.
According to a report from sources, the multi-year agreement would see the duo create and produce projects that would only be streamed on Prime Video.
This information is released just before Flanagan and Macy’s prior contract with Netflix expires. Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said of Mike and Trevor when he was speaking about the intriguing new deal: “Mike and Trevor are remarkable at telling immersive, suspenseful stories that masterfully keep audiences engaged from start to finish.”
We are thrilled to welcome them to Amazon Studios, and we look forward to our customers around the world experiencing their genre-defying creativity, they concluded.
Mike Flanagan and Macy added their two cents, stating:
“Amazon is a studio that we have long admired. Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.”
For any fan of horror, especially one who enjoys Flanagan’s extensive body of spooky work, this is amazing news.
In terms of the contemporary subgenre, Flanagan is arguably the best horror director currently at work. No other director has had as much of an impact on the genre in both television and film as Flanagan.
The writer-director is best known for his work on the movies Oculus, Hush, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep. The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and the most recent YA sensation The Midnight Club are just a few of his mind-blowing TV credits. In particular, two of the greatest TV shows ever are Hill House and Midnight Mass.
However, up until this point, all of Flanagan’s TV work has been for Netflix; his upcoming limited series The Fall of the House of Usher is the last thing the director is making for the streamer as part of their current agreement.
This could be fantastic news for horror fans because Amazon has proven to be more receptive to physical media than Netflix. The majority of Flanagan’s work for the streaming service, including Midnight Mass, Hush, and Gerald’s Game, never saw a physical release.
Netflix rarely releases its exclusive content on Blu-ray. Contrarily, Amazon has exhibited support for physical media more frequently, as evidenced by their recent Blu-ray releases of their popular television series The Boys and Reacher.
Considering Flanagan’s strong support for physical media, hopefully this means Amazon will release the director’s future work on Blu-ray.
You can catch up on the “Flanganverse” right now on Netflix while we wait in bated breath to see what Flanagan and Macy dreadfully concoct with Amazon.
Flanagan will soon make a comeback as a feature film director with The Season of Passage. However, this new Amazon agreement will not apply to Intrepid’s upcoming feature film projects.
The Midnight Club, the most recent Netflix original series from Flanagan, has a trailer available below.
