Rian Johnson should be exhilarated right now if anyone should. Following a limited theatrical run, his most recent movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was released to positive reviews after Netflix paid an eye-popping $400 million or more for the rights to Knives Out sequels.

Additionally, the movie has recently received a few nominations for Critics Choice Awards, and additional recognition from award organizations is anticipated in the upcoming weeks. For a guy who, in the opinion of some foolish individuals, destroyed Star Wars, it represents quite the comeback.

Of course, Johnson was the director of 2017’s The Last Jedi, one of the most contentious and polarizing films in the history of the franchise. Despite the negative reviews from fans, the movie received high marks from critics. The director is still eager to explore more of the galaxy far, far away, despite the negative public reaction.

He was then contracted to produce an original trilogy of his own after The Last Jedi’s release, something he is still eager to achieve.

According to Johnson, his passion for Star Wars hasn’t diminished and he wants to complete the project he started.

“It wouldn’t be the end of the world for anyone, I think. But I would be sad. I love the world. I love the people. I love ‘Star Wars’ fans. I love the passion of how they engage in it, there’s nothing like telling a story in this world and then experiencing people truly connecting to it and letting you know that. It’s extraordinary. So I’m hoping I get to do it again, but nothing is the end of the world until the end of the world actually happens, which, what day of the week is it?”

Fortunately for Johnson, the exploits of the oddball Southern investigator Benoit Blanc and his new inspiration, Daniel Craig, with whom he collaborated on the sale of the franchise to Netflix, keep him very busy.

The third instalment of the intrepid investigator’s most recent adventures is about to get under way, and Johnson is eager to bring the movie home to the United States after a trip to warm southern Greece.

“I want it to be in America,” he said. “There’s a lot of tempting things of going to – Paris or the Alps – but I feel it’s really important that these are American movies. Even with Glass Onion, it’s set overseas but it’s a group of Americans who are trapped on an island together, so bringing it back to somewhere a little closer to home I think could be a good thing for the next one.”
