Riverdale‘ seventh and final season’s  first trailer was released, the cast is travelling back in time to solve one of their greatest mysteries to date: being stranded in the 1950s.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator and showrunner of the series, recently shared a sneak peek at a character introduction for the upcoming season on social media.

They are “creating something absolutely spectacular this year,” he writes in his post. The footage appeared just after the season’s first photos were unveiled.

The footage starts off with “Rock Around the Clock” being played on a diner jukebox before transitioning into a classic programme introduction with the main cast. It depicts Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), Kevin (Casey Cott), Toni (Vanessa Morgan), and Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) having a good time while wearing period-appropriate attire and sporting their respective hairstyles.

None of the characters appear to be aware of how they actually got to that time period. Jughead (Cole Sprouse), who is sporting the character’s distinctive crown, completes the cast.

He is the only one who truly understands what has happened, therefore in contrast to the others, he appears bewildered and afraid.

The setting for Riverdale Season 7 will be the 1950s, as shown in the film and images. In the sixth season’s climax, a comet was heading straight towards the town.

Ultimately, Cheryl and her amplified superpowers were able to destroy it and save everyone, but doing so had one significant drawback: it sent the town back in time.

Jughead is the only member of the gang who can recall life before the comet; the others are once more high school students.

This reverse time jump, according to Aguirre-Sacasa, was “extremely unexpected yet entirely natural,” especially following the significant time jump the show made in season 5 that aged the characters by seven years.

For the time being, specific information regarding what viewers might anticipate is being kept mostly under wraps. Aguirre-Sacasa reveals that at the end of the season’s first episode, “Don’t Worry, Darling,” Jughead will understand why he is the only one who remembers.

“The biggest struggle is our characters trying to live authentic individualistic lives during a time period where that was really hard to do,” he says, noting that this season will be different from previous ones in that it will put more emphasis on the characters finding their way than on a primary antagonist.

The show’s most grounded season, which will be a significant difference from previous seasons given that it has become known for its increasingly outlandish stories, was also disclosed by him. However, because of the era’s characteristics, viewers can still anticipate one last, wild ride:

“Thank god the ’50s were as crazy as they were, because it’s been so fun to be in that world. Every season we explore the tropes of a specific genre, be it supernatural, be it pulp, be it crime. This year our genre is the 1950s, so we’re in dialogue with the American myth of what the 1950s were versus the reality.”

The premiere of Riverdale’s last season has not been set, however it is anticipated to happen in the spring of 2023.
