‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’ box office is bringing in the new year. The movie has made $1.37 billion worldwide and is on pace to reach $1.4 shortly after only a few days after passing the $1 billion milestone.

The movie reached the billion dollar mark in just under two weeks, despite having premiered in some foreign countries before the US. Currently, it is anticipated to end up costing between between $1.6 and $1.9 billion overall.

Way of the Water, which outperformed Jurassic World: Dominion ($1 billion) in the global box office, is currently in second place going into 2023.

Additionally, it recently outperformed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($820 million), Minions: The Rise of Gru ($939 million), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955 million). Top Gun: Maverick, a legacy follow-up, continues to hold the top spot with $1.49 billion.

Way of the Water outperformed Avatar domestically in its opening weekend, earning $134 million compared to Avatar’s $77 million.

Way of the Water must make up for a lot of lost time, though. The original movie sold more consistently and profited from numerous theatre rereleases.

As a result, it was able to bring in $2.9 billion internationally, but the sequel will eventually need to make about $2 billion in revenue to break even.

However, the movie witnessed a 2% gain during the most recent weekend, earning $63.4 million. It currently has $420 million in domestic revenue.

Way of the Water follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaa), and their family as they return to Pandora more than ten years after the events of Avatar.

They are forced to leave their land because of the battle with humans and move to the water clans while collaborating with the other Na’vi to safeguard Pandora.

James Cameron authored the screenplay along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and he also directed the movie.

Regarding any divergent viewpoints on the movie, Way of the Water has received significant accolades for its visual effects. Thanks to James Cameron’s ambitious vision and the VFX team’s incredible achievements, the sequel to Avatar raises the bar for its looks much like the first did.

It’s “almost hard to believe that this isn’t some actual world that Cameron has unearthed and is presenting to the world,” writes Ross Bonaime in his evaluation of the film’s graphics, which include how motion capture aids in character development.
