Don Williams, dead at 100
His wife Jeanne confirmed his passing to The Hollywood Reporter, saying that Don passed away on Friday at his home in Branson, Missouri, from natural causes. The Williams Brothers’ representatives did not respond to request for comment right away.
Don, the second-oldest member of the vocal quartet, was born in Wall Lake, Iowa, on October 9, 1922.
Their father Jay Williams oversaw the band. The band did radio appearances on stations in Iowa, Chicago, and Cincinnati before relocating to Los Angeles and signing a contract with MGM.
The quartet teamed up with Kay Thompson to do a nightclub show choreographed by MGM choreographer Robert Alton after making an appearance in Bing Crosby’s 1944 smash “Swinging on a Star.” The Brothers and Thompson later worked together on movies including Good News (1946), The Harvey Girls (1946), Ziegfeld Follies (1945), and Anchors Aweigh (1945). The ensemble additionally appeared in the musicals Janie (1944), Kansas City Kitty (1944), Something in the Wind (1947), and Ladies’ Man (1948). (1947).
Don had performed on TV shows during his solo career, including ones hosted by Eddie Fisher and Nat King Cole. In addition, he appeared on an episode of Playhouse 90 in 1956 and has performed at the Tropicana Las Vegas since it opened in 1957.
Don later took on the positions of agent and manager, taking care of people like Mary Tyler Moore and singers Ray Stevens and Roger Miller as his clients. From 1962 to 1990, he got together with his siblings every year for The Andy Williams Christmas performance. Don Williams County Park, a leisure area in Iowa, is also named in his honour.
Bob, the oldest brother and the firstborn, passed away in September 2003 at the age of 85. Dick, who was born in 1926 and passed away in 2018, was 91 years old. The youngest member of the singing group, Andy, was born in 1927 and passed away in 2012 at the age of 84.
Don is survived, per THR, by his wife of 41 years, their identical twin sons David and Andy (who also made music as the Williams Brothers in the 1990s), and a grandson, Harrison.
