Queen asked Meghan Markle about Donald Trump in first meeting: Spare
The Queen asked Meghan Markle about her thoughts on Donald Trump the first time the two women met, according to Prince Harry’s memoir Spare.
The Duke of Sussex said introducing his grandmother to his now-wife Meghan was “pleasant” and the late Queen looked “pleased”.
Queen Elizabeth II asked Meghan about Trump during the meeting, which took place at Royal Lodge, the Duke of York’s Berkshire home ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election, but she quickly changed the subject.
Writing about the encounter in his book, Harry said: “It was all very pleasant. Granny even asked Meg what she thought of Donald Trump
“Meg thought politics a no-win game, so she changed the subject to Canada.”
The Duke of Sussex stated that his grandmother “squinted” and told Meghan, “I thought you were American”, to which Meghan replied: “I am, but I’ve been living in Canada for seven years for work.”
The book added: “Granny looked pleased. Commonwealth. Good, fine.”
According to the Independent, Harry stated that the Queen had to leave after about 20 minutes and was escorted by Prince Andrew.
He explained how the former Suits star didn’t recognise the Duke of York, who was carrying the Queen’s handbag when he joined them, and mistook him for the monarch’s assistant.
