Royals gather for funeral of Greece’s King Constantine
Athens: A large contingent of European nobility is anticipated to travel to Athens for the funeral of Constantine II, the last monarch of Greece, on Monday. The former monarch, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82, will be remembered during the ceremony by royals from Britain, Denmark, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain.
However, there has been debate in Greece regarding the funeral services.
The administration has opted not to accord Constantine the honour of a state funeral because he was a contentious character in the history of the nation.
Nearly 200 people are anticipated at the private ceremony, which starts at midday at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral.
The whole Spanish royal family, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Crown Prince Frederik, the royals of Sweden, the Netherlands’ king and queen, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and Prince Albert II of Monaco are expected to attend.
Princess Anne, the late queen Elizabeth II’s daughter, will represent the British Crown. Prince William, the godson of Constantine, and King Charles III, the former Greek king’s cousin, are not anticipated to accompany her.
President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece will not be present at the burial. Deputy Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos and Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni will speak on behalf of the Greek government.
