Marvel superhero actor Jeremy Renner said on Tuesday that he was “messed up” after being hit by his own 14,000-lb (6-ton) snow plough as he tried to get into the driver’s seat.
Renner was seriously hurt Sunday morning near his home in Nevada when he tried to stop the PistenBully machine, which had started moving forward after he used it to help a family member get their stuck car out of the snow.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said at a press conference, “Mr. Renner tries to get back into the driver’s seat to stop the rolling PistenBully.”
“According to our investigation, this is when that PistenBully runs over Mr. Renner.”
At a press conference on Tuesday, officials said there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved in what is being called a “tragic accident.”
Sheriff Balaam said that an investigation was going on because Renner had “severe injuries.” Part of the investigation is looking for signs of mechanical failure, he said.
Renner’s PistenBully, also known as a “snowcat,” is a big, specialised snowplough with giant, raised caterpillar tracks on each side of an enclosed cab.
Balaam said that emergency workers had a hard time getting to Renner because it had snowed three feet (one metre) the night before, which caused several drivers to leave their cars on a nearby highway.
When they got there, they helped Renner and said, “Some good neighbours of Mr. Renner’s came out with some towels and helped.”
The sheriff said Renner was a “great neighbour” because he had been ploughing private roads for people in the area with his machine.
