Sidharth Malhotra portrays an R&AW agent in Pakistan who marries an innocent girl and uses her as a cover in his mission to expose a nuclear facility while wearing a kurta pyjama and sporting kohl-rimmed eyes.

The plot of Mission Majnu is praised for being filled with heroism and patriotism. It is engaging, exciting, and full of emotion. However, the experience is ruined by far too many obvious coincidences and flaws that are difficult to overlook.

Before Republic Day, director Shantanu Bagchi honours all heroes who give their lives for their country without wearing a uniform.

The narrative, which was co-written by Aseem Arrora, Sumit Batheja, and Parveez Shaikh, stumbles frequently and prevents Mission Majnu from having a significant impact.

Mission Majnu, which is set in the 1970s, tells the tale of Amandeep Ajitpal Singh, who is playing Tariq (Sidharth), who is tired of being referred to as the son of a traitor but now wants to clear his mother’s name.

He is in Pakistan on a clandestine mission to reveal a nuclear weapons programme. He is joined by two additional Indian undercover spies, Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi, whose stellar performances elevate the movie.

Like any other spy thriller, this one has a love interest, this time involving the blind Nasreen (Rashmika Mandanna), who is unaware of his objective.

The R&AW chief (Parmeet Sethi) continues the mission with his men in the neighbouring country despite the fact that the government back home in India has changed and wants to mend its ways with Pakistan.

There is too much confusion and chaos, which builds to a well-known climax but still sends chills down your spine. The shootout that ensues after killing nearly everyone on the radar after discovering that several R&AW agents reside in Pakistan is a fairly well-shot sequence. The scenes where the characters Kumud and Sharib are the focus deserve special mention.

You can’t fault Sidharth for his performance; he’s back in top form and has a delightful screen presence. He deserves praise for the dialect he chose and his expressiveness.

Although she doesn’t have much to do, Rashmika injects some newness into the movie. There isn’t much you can anticipate from her character to advance the plot given the few scenes she is in.

After receiving praise for his portrayal of an army officer in Shershaah (2021), Sidharth gives Mission Majnu’s weak story the benefit of the doubt, which is disappointing because it undermines his performance in some way.

It makes sense that an undercover agent isn’t expected to adhere to established standards and must act as normally as possible, but I couldn’t understand why there were so many silly scenes and dialogues used to develop the character.

Furthermore, the sequence of events, including his landing at the Brigadier’s residence to try to learn the location of Pakistan’s nuclear plant or his boarding the Samjhauta Express without any documentation or a passport while pretending to be a Sikh, followed by a fight on top of the train and finally managing a clean escape, all become a little overwhelming after a while.

The fact that Tariq was given this superpower to instantly complete even the most challenging tasks makes me laugh.

You would be astounded to see how he draws ideas from these situations that move him closer to his goal, whether it be how an X-ray machine emits dangerous radiations or how foreigners would still use an English toilet in the 1970s.

Mission Majnu is an entertaining film, but it does push you to ignore everything else and focus solely on the hero who appears on screen. Netflix is currently streaming the movie.
