With an incredible 11 nominations, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is ahead of the competition. The German-language World War I epic “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Ireland-set tragicomedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” both received nine nods.

The Academy Awards have once again spurned several favorite faces who were strongly tipped to win. Tom Cruise, a three-time Oscar candidate, was vying for the title of Best Actor for the first time since “Jerry Maguire” in 1996. His eagerly anticipated “Top Gun” sequel received favorable reviews and became the most financially successful movie of 2022.

Six nominations were given to “Maverick,” including one for best picture. Many experts believed that Cruise would join the “Top Gun” train, but getting an acting role in a box office hit proved to be nearly difficult.

Similarly, James Cameron, who proclaimed himself “the ruler of the universe” after winning the Directing Oscar for “Titanic” 25 years ago, was also passed over by the Oscars. While “Avatar: The Way of Water” made the Best Picture list and was nominated in three craft categories, the director might win the award.

Two sequels, “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water,” are up for best picture for the first time. The combined box office for the two blockbusters is $3.5 billion.

Tom Cruise was not nominated for an acting award, nevertheless. One of the most egregious Oscar snubs occurred on Tuesday when members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided not to nominate James Camron for best director.
