Avatar: The Way of Water becomes the third highest grossing film of all time
James Cameron is a pioneer in his field as a director. Avatar: The Way of Water, the latest blockbuster from the director, has surpassed Titanic to move up to third place on the list of all-time highest-grossing films at the global box office after a closely fought battle over the past week.
In comparison to Titanic’s $2.242 billion, The Way of Water has already made $2.243 billion internationally. The Way of Water was ready to surpass the 1997 blockbuster at the box office when it was re-released in theatres last week in honor of its 25th anniversary. But, the re-release only postponed the inevitable.
However there’s a chance that these two are stuck in an unending battle for the same slot with every re-release in the future, given that The Way of Water is also nearing the conclusion of its run in a few weeks.
The fact that Cameron has now been credited with directing three of the top four highest-grossing films in history is just astounding. With $2.9 billion in worldwide box office receipts, the first Avatar is still the most-grossing movie of all time. At around $2.8 billion, Avengers: Endgame takes the number two position.
With a current domestic box office standing of $657 million, The Way of Water also surpassed Jurassic Park this past weekend to become the ninth-highest-grossing movie of all time. In the next few days, the movie will probably surpass Titanic ($671 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($678 million) to take over the seventh slot on the all-time domestic list.
