LONDON (AP) — Gary Glitter, a former pop artist who was convicted of sexually abusing three young girls in the 1970s, was released from jail in England on Friday after completing half of a 16-year sentence.

Paul Gadd, the 79-year-old singer’s real name, was released from a Dorset prison in southwest England. In the UK, it is typical for offenders to be released halfway through their terms of imprisonment and subsequently placed on probation.

“Sex offenders like Paul Gadd are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest license conditions, including being fitted with a GPS tag,’’ the Ministry of Justice said in a statement. “If the offender breaches these conditions at any point, they can go back behind bars.”

The musician was found guilty of four charges of indecent assault, one crime of having sex with a minor under 13, one case of attempted rape, and one count of attempted rape.

As part of Operation Yewtree, the federal inquiry started after the child abuse scandal involving the late BBC comedian Jimmy Savile, Glitter was detained in October 2012.

Glitter gained notoriety after being found guilty of child abuse allegations in Vietnam, but he is most remembered for the popular song “Rock & Roll (Part 2),” which was published in 1972.
