Kiefer Sutherland to play disgraced cop in ‘The Winter Kills’
Kiefer Sutherland has landed his next gig. It has been announced that the actor will star in XYZ Films’ upcoming action-thriller The Winter Kills. The project, directed by John Stalberg Jr., is set to begin filming in New Jersey this spring.
According to XYZ, Sutherland will play a “disgraced cop [who] pursues the serial killer who murdered his partner ten years ago – and has resurfaced, killing again” in The Winter Kills.
There have been no further details released about the plot of the film, and Sutherland is the only cast member currently attached to the project.
Ben Floro Carney wrote The Winter Kills, and the screenplay was taken from a recent edition of the Black List, which is an annual report of the most popular scripts in Hollywood that have yet to be produced.
The film is described as “Se7en meets Bad Lieutenant” and is produced by Patrick Rizzotti, Paul Johansson, David Guglielmo Wyatt Russell, Oliver Hudson, Stalberg, and XYZ.
The Winter Kills will be shown to buyers at the upcoming European Film Market, where the film’s producers will look for a distributor.
The film’s production will also be aided by Blue Fox Financing, a marketplace recently launched by Rizzotti to connect filmmakers with debt lenders.
Rizzotti has produced a number of successful films for major studios, including Pride, The Super, and The Collector, which spawned two sequels.
“Kiefer Sutherland is an absolute legend, and I’m beyond thrilled to match his rare talent with a role that will require every ounce of it,” Stalberg said. “I couldn’t imagine a better team of professionals to bring The Winter Kills to life, including Wyatt Russell and Oliver Hudson – my Slow Burn partners – as well as Patrick Rizzotti, David Guglielmo, Paul Johanson, and the crack team at XYZ.”
Sutherland is best known for his role as Jack Bauer in the Fox crime drama 24, for which he received numerous awards, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
He is also well-known for his role as President Tom Kirkman in the three-season ABC/Netflix political drama Designated Survivor.
Sutherland has also appeared in films such as The Three Musketeers, Flatliners, Stand by Me, and Phone Booth. He will next be seen in the Paramount+ series Rabbit Hole, as well as an unspecified role in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi mystery film They Cloned Tyrone.
XYZ is no stranger to high-quality projects, as the studio is currently developing a number of films for the European Film Market.
Seven Veils, starring Emmy and Golden Globe winner Amanda Seyfried, is among them, as are Daniela Forever, starring Henry Golding, and BlackBerry, directed by Matt Johnson. The Winter Kills does not yet have a release date.
