While Rihanna’s on-stage pregnancy announcement may have been the highlight of her Super Bowl halftime show in 2023, the diva also used her appearance to pay chic homage to the late André Leon Talley, a legendary figure in the world of fashion who passed away in January 2022 at the age of 73.

The Bad Gal put on a floor-sweeping red leather Alaa puffer that resembled Talley’s famous scarlet Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat as she launched into her big hit “Umbrella” toward the close of her set.

Photos of similar ensembles were posted on Talley’s official Instagram page to commemorate the occasion, along with some memorable “Umbrella” lyrics: “We’ll shine together when the sun shines. I promised to stay with you forever and that I would always be your buddy.

In comments, friends and admirers of the two fashion icons praised their sartorial respect. Stylist June Ambrose wrote, “This was a magnificent tribute,” while novelist Mara Brock Akil added, “I knew it! enjoyed it too! She met Andre in the sky, and I loved it! What a jewel!

Actress Angie Harmon said, “He would’ve been so pleased today!” “Southern Charm” star Patricia Altschul added, “He will be missed by so many of us who loved him… I cried during Rihanna’s homage.

The “Diamonds” singer and the “Chiffon Trenches” author were lifelong friends; their chemistry could be seen in their numerous Met Gala red carpet interviews over the years. Talley was even moved to tears by Rihanna’s iconic yellow Guo Pei ensemble from the 2015 event.

In audio recorded for the 2016 Met Gala documentary “The First Monday in May,” the editor commented, “I adore a girl from humble beginnings who becomes a great star.”

Although Rihanna didn’t actually wear Talley’s Norma Kamali coat on stage, it will be auctioned off at Christie’s along with other pieces from Talley’s private collection, including his Louis Vuitton luggage, Karl Lagerfeld sketches, and designer caftans.

Possibly Rihanna will participate in the bidding when the auction starts on February 15.
