Will Smith was scheduled to perform at Grammys 2023 hip-hop tribute
One notable person was absent from the Grammy homage to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop: Will Smith.
The “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star had to cancel last-minute plans to appear at the award event, according to Questlove, who created the legendary 10-minute performance.
“I’ll give away the spoiler. Although they began filming “Bad Boys 4” this week, Will Smith participated in the celebrations tonight, according to Questlove. We had to lose Will because he had to take a lot of opening shots.
Smith is “always shooting movies,” Quest continued, so getting him onboard was “a shot in the dark.”
Even though Quest had to shorten the performance from 23 minutes to just 14, it still managed to stand out as one of the ceremony’s highlights despite Smith’s absence.
Quest warned Laverne Cox that he “could have Obama-gray hair” by the end of the night due to scheduling conflicts and making sure all singers arrived on time.
Final results were as expected, and it became one of the most talked-about moments from the biggest night in music. Nelly’s song “Hot in Here,” Busta Rhymes’ well-known passage from “Look At Me Now,” and “The Message” by hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five were among the highlights of the set.
Future, Ice-T, Lil Baby, Salt-N-Pepa, L.L. Cool J, Queen Latifah, RUN-DMC, Too $hort, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Scarface, Swizz Beatz, Lil Uzi Vert, and others are a few other well-known names.
Given his past involvement with the 2022 Oscars, many fans may be surprised by Quest’s decision to have Smith participate in the production.
The producer of “Summer of Soul” received an Academy Award for best documentary immediately following Smith’s infamous slap on Chris Rock, but his major achievement was undoubtedly overshadowed.
Even though insiders at the time informed that Quest and his team felt “weird” collecting the award on stage after the incident, it seems they have since made amends.
