Barry, starring Bill Hader and Alec Berg, returns for its fourth and final season. HBO recently released a teaser for the dark comedy’s upcoming season, which is set to premiere on April 16. The show has done exceedingly well, getting rave reviews and collecting many awards. So, what prompted Hader to end the show after only four seasons?

Why is Barry’s fourth season the last?

In an interview with Variety, Bill Hader explained that while writing the fourth season with the series’ writers’ team, a “very clear ending” presented itself. However, he stated that he did not want to rush it by saying goodbye to the show. So, Hader revealed, he only revealed the news last year, when filming for Season 4 began. The actor recalled telling Amy Gravitt, HBO’s vice president of comedy programming, that the show would inevitably end after the fourth season. Gravitt stated that she trusts Hader’s decisions for the show, and while they are sentimental, she believes it is the right time to end the show.

Teaser for Barry Season 4

The teaser for Barry Season 4 was recently released. In the short video, we see Barry Berkman (played by Bill Hader) in prison while Walker Brothers’ song After the Lights Go Out plays in the background. He then makes several phone calls. We see his old friend Cousineau telling Barry that he has his back.

Barry then imagines his ex-lover Sally (Sarah Goldberg), Gene, and his hitman handler Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) walking by. As the teaser progresses, we see Barry hit his head on a wall while Sally is concerned. Gene is also seen holding a gun. We then see Barry screaming into the phone, telling someone to help him out and threatening to come after them if he gets out of prison.

Barry will be available on April 16th.
