Busy Philipps joins the ‘Mean Girls’ movie musical as Regina George’s mother. The Deadline item was also uploaded on her Instagram story, along with the caption “Reader, She cried” (From happiness for once.) “How did I end up in the Tina Fey universe? It is so real, omg,” I thought. I appreciate her friendship and support every day,” she stated in a subsequent Instagram story about the news. The announcement follows on Wednesday’s choice of Jenna Fischer, a former cast member of The Office, to portray Cady Heron’s mother.

Amy Poehler created the part for fellow SNL veteran Fey’s 2004 Paramount original movie. This will not be Philipps’ first time portraying Mrs. George; for Halloween 2019, the Girls5eva star and her daughter, Regina George of the Plastics, dressed as the iconic figure.

Along with creating the screenplay and performing in the movie musical adaption, Fey is also producing the film with Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live. The musical’s original tunes, written by Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond with lyrics by Nell Benjamin, are being choreographed by Kyle Hanagami, who is well-known for his popular YouTube videos.

Angourie Rice, who starred in Senior Year, will play Cady Heron in the movie. Renée Rapp, who starred in Sex Lives of College Girls, will reprise her Broadway role as Regina George.

The Plastics teammates Karen and Gretchen will be played by Avantika and Bebe Wood, and Aaron Samuels will be played by The Summer I Became Beautiful actor Christopher Briney. In a February 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Seyfried stated that she and her former co-stars are “100% into” appearing in a cameo. She told the outlet, “I think we all kind of just need to hang. It is been a long legacy for Mean Girls.

The movie is being co-directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. The pair has previously collaborated on a variety of projects, including music videos and stage productions, but Mean Girls will be their first studio feature film as directors, according to Broadway Buzz. A recent casting call for extras claims that filming will start in New Jersey in March 2023. Even though Paramount Studios has not given a specific date for its release, Paramount+ will be the only place to stream it.
