• Prince Edward received the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

According to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Friday, the 74-year-old monarch has carried out the final desires of his late parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, by giving his youngest sibling the title of his late father (10.03.23).

The news was made on Edward’s birthday and at the same time as the prince was visiting the Scottish city.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “His Majesty The King has been pleased to confer the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar, on the occasion of His Royal Highness’s 59th birthday.

“The title will be held by Prince Edward for His Royal Highness’s lifetime.

“The Dukedom was last created for Prince Philip in 1947, upon his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, who held the title of Duchess of Edinburgh before acceding to the throne in 1952.

“The new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are proud to continue Prince Philip’s legacy of promoting opportunities for young people of all backgrounds to reach their full potential.”

While their 15-year-old son James, Viscount Severn, will now hold the title of Earl of Wessex, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, will continue to hold the title of the Countess of Wessex while Edward now has the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

James succeeds Edward as Earl of Wessex and Forfar in the case of his passing, but the title of Duke of Edinburgh will be returned to the Crown because it does not automatically pass down.

The title of the couple’s 19-year-old daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, remains the same.
