Scream reigns supreme at North American box office
The latest entry in the slasher genre, which began in 1996 with the first Scream from the late director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson, is expected to debut to a domestic audience this weekend with a $43.5 million opening.
According to IMDb’s Box Office Mojo, the horror sequel has already outperformed Creed III and 65 with a $19.3 million opening day. The film’s reported $35 million budget.
The fifth installment of the franchise debuted domestically last year to $30 million, while Scream 4 (2011), Scream 3, and Scream 2 (1997) debuted to $18.7 million, $34.7 million, and $33 million, respectively (without accounting for inflation) (not adjusted for inflation).
Scream (1996) had a $6.4 million debut before topping $103 million over its initial run, which is still the greatest domestic take for the franchise.
Neve Campbell, the original Scream star and ultimate last girl, said in June that she had made the “extremely tough decision” not to return for Scream VI after appearing in the previous five Scream movies.
“Sadly, I will not be producing the following Scream movie. I have had to put in a lot of effort as a woman in my profession to prove my worth, especially with Scream “In a statement, she stated. “I felt the offer that was made to me did not correspond to the value I had contributed to the business,” the applicant said.
She last appeared in Craven’s fifth film, which debuted in January 2022, after giving her breakthrough performance in the first movie.
