Great news for John Wick fans! The universe of the hit series is expanding with a new anime prequel that aims to answer key questions, including why Keanu Reeves’ character decided to retire. The development of a prequel anime is officially underway, focusing on his past and love life.

Chad Stahelski, the co-creator of the franchise, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that they are working on three new projects. The journey of John Wick began ten years ago when he sought revenge for the murder of his dog, a gift from his late wife. After four movies, a spinoff film called Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, is also set to release in June 2025.

The team is currently developing an anime feature, a TV show, and a new spinoff focused on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine. While these projects are in the early stages, fans are eager to see what comes next.

Stahelski said, “We’re knee-deep in development on a feature anime about John Wick,” emphasizing that the project is still in its beginning phases and lacks a release date. He described the anime as a prequel that will explore Wick’s past and the “impossible task” that led to his retirement. He added, “We can be a little bit more crazy and nutty in the anime,” suggesting more creative freedom in storytelling.
