Lahore is grappling with its worst smog crisis in recent years, with air quality reaching hazardous levels. As reported by BBC, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to over 1000 multiple times this past week, a stark contrast to the alarming 300-point threshold deemed dangerous.

The thick smog, which worsens as winter approaches, causes burning sensations in the throat and severe discomfort, especially for individuals with pre-existing lung conditions.

The crisis has prompted celebrities like Saba Qamar to raise their voices. On Instagram, she pleaded, “Dear Lahore, I just want to breathe. The smog is thick, suffocating, and I can feel it in every breath. For those of us with asthma, it’s more than just discomfort. It’s a struggle to live each moment. Please, clear skies, come back soon.”

Nadia Jamil also took to social media to highlight the gravity of the situation, writing, “You can live without food and water for a few days. You can survive without cars, roads, and buildings. We cannot survive for more than a few minutes without breathing. We cannot breathe effectively without clean air.” She called for urgent action, urging experts to find solutions to protect public health.

Authorities have implemented measures, including school closures and curfews on commercial activity, but the smog’s persistence signals that the worst is yet to come.
