In a bid to strengthen cultural ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh, two Bangladeshi films were released in Pakistani cinemas in 2024. However, the box office performance of these films was a mixed bag.

The first film, the horror movie “Mona Jinn 2,” struggled to captivate Pakistani audiences, despite being subtitled in English. Saad Baig, general manager of a private cinema hall, noted that language wasn’t the sole factor: “For example, the Indonesian film ‘Sajeen,’ which was also subtitled, managed to earn Rs 200 million even in its early release stages. It has proven to be a boon for the Pakistani cinema industry during tough times.”

The second film, the action blockbuster “Tofaan,” fared better, attracting a larger audience. Ahmed Raza, a film manager, explained that the film’s success could be attributed to its appeal to South Asian audiences, with elements reminiscent of Indian blockbusters like “Animal” and “KGF.” He added, “From a business point of view, it is before time to say whether it will beat the target or not, but it will promote cultural ties between two countries.”

Despite the mixed results, Sataish Anand, Chairman of Eveready Group of Companies, expressed interest in bringing more Bangladeshi films to Pakistani cinemas. This move could further strengthen the cultural exchange between the two nations and open up new opportunities for the film industries of both countries.
