Eugenio Derbez has publicly apologized to Selena Gomez after making critical remarks about her performance in the musical film Emilia Pérez. The Mexican actor and comedian issued his apology via TikTok, following backlash for calling Gomez’s acting “indefensible” during a podcast.

“Dear Selena, I truly apologise for my careless comments,” Derbez began, adding, “They are indefensible and go against everything I stand for.” He emphasized the importance of solidarity among Latinos, saying, “As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.”

Reflecting on the situation, Derbez said, “Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated, not diminished by my thoughtless remarks. I’m walking away from this with an important lesson learned.”

Derbez had initially criticized Gomez during an episode of Hablando de Cine, expressing dissatisfaction with her Spanish-speaking scenes, stating, “Selena is indefensible,” and claiming that the performance’s flaws might not be evident to non-Spanish speakers.

Gomez responded to the criticism, saying, “I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.” She also defended her fans, asserting, “Do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up for me.”

The controversy highlights the ongoing debate over representation and cultural support within the entertainment industry.
