Despite high expectations, Joker: Folie à Deux underperformed at the box office last year, earning significantly less than its 2019 predecessor, Joker. In a recent interview with Elle, Lady Gaga, who stars as Lee Quinzel in the film, addressed its lukewarm reception, emphasizing that artistic work will not always resonate with everyone.

“People just sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple,” she stated. Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of art, she added, “And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended. When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”

Alongside her acting career, Lady Gaga is gearing up for the release of her new album, Mayhem, which will feature 14 songs, including Disease and Die With a Smile. Discussing the album’s personal significance, she shared, “I feel some embarrassment and that’s a very vulnerable thing to share. But I think through making this album, I was able to really love myself through all of that.”

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie à Deux is a psychological thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey.
