Chris Evans has dismissed speculation about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday, despite previous reports confirming his involvement.

In an interview with Esquire for a cover story on Anthony Mackie, Evans refuted the claims, stating, “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”

Evans first appeared as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and played the role across multiple films before officially retiring from the character after Avengers: Endgame (2019).

His longtime co-star, Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon, now carries the Captain America mantle. Mackie’s Captain America: Brave New World is set to release on February 14, 2025.

When asked about Evans’ potential return, Mackie admitted he had no idea, saying, “I didn’t know! I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then.” He added, “I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”

Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on May 1, 2026, and will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
