Bollywood filmmaker Rakesh Roshan launched his son Hrithik Roshan in the 2000 romantic thriller Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, which also marked Ameesha Patel’s debut. While the film’s star cast, story, and music contributed to its massive success, one of its most iconic elements was the breathtaking island where key scenes were filmed. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Roshan revealed how he discovered the stunning location.

Speaking on the Cult Creator Podcast, the director shared that his search for a filming location initially took him to Australia, where he hoped to find a suitable ship.

However, after being disappointed by multiple options, he continued looking. It was then that he came across a postcard in Athens featuring a sailboat and another showing rocks in the sea—Krabi Island. Intrigued, he flew to Phuket and drove four hours to Krabi. “I found the location I had always dreamed of,” he recalled.

Discussing his passion for unique backdrops, Roshan added, “I am very fond of shooting at good locations. When the script is ready, the first thing I do is go and see all the locations. I dream about those locations and will go to every corner of the world to find them.”

Recently, the film was re-released on the big screen, allowing fans to relive the magic on 70 mm.
